Yuba County Mother Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
Case summary
On April 7, 2022, Yuba County sheriff's deputies found Williams's two-year-old and five-month-old children dead in the bathtub of her home in Linda, California. Williams, 26, initially pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse resulting in death, then in July 2022 entered a dual plea of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity. After both court-appointed evaluators agreed she was insane at the time, Yuba County Superior Court Judge Benjamin Wirtschafter found her not guilty by reason of insanity in early 2023 and signed an order committing her to a state hospital for treatment and supervision.
Mental-health context
Two doctors — one appointed at the request of the prosecution, one at the request of the defence — independently concluded that Williams was battling postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis and was legally insane at the time of the drownings.
Status / outcome
Not guilty by reason of insanity (2023); committed to a state hospital
